Socks for the Soul provides warm feet for neighbors in need
Socks for the Soul is wrapping up its seventh year of distributing warm socks to neighbors in need at Open Arms Mission Food Pantry, 1548 S. Main Street in Antioch.
“Over the past seven years thanks to the support of local schools, churches, organizations, small businesses and generous individuals we have collected and distributed over 40,000 pairs of socks,” said program organizer Judy Close. Last year the program collected over 5,000 pairs of socks. Clearly the need is there.”
“Our goal is Warm Feet, Warm Hearts for everyone. Your generosity will greatly warm the hearts and the feet of your neighbors that utilize Open Arms Mission to help supplement their weekly food.”
In 2009, on behalf of Open Arms Mission, the Close family initiated a campaign to provide warm socks for families in need during the cold winter months. Each week families throughout Antioch and Lake Villa Townships come to Open Arms Mission for assistance. One week each month, October through March, warm socks are provided for each family member along with their food and milk. “Our simple request of you is to donate packages of new warm socks, any size, men, women, boys, girls and infants,” said Judy.
A Sock Drive is a great project for scout troops, school and church youth groups and other community organizations. For example, WC Petty School students and staff have generously contributed over 4,700 pairs of socks since the program started seven years ago.
